Unravelled embroidery on reclaimed military tent – 155 x 145 cm
Ho Chi Minh City, 2008
Between 2006 and 2017, Grazioli’s environmental-themed work was particularly expressed through a series of ‘unravelled embroideries’ created in Chennai (India) and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam).
The process involved reclaiming old military tarps, tents or uniform fabrics that were first taken to be blessed in a temple and then embroidered with sacred and natural images.
At this point, the embroidery was subjected to a violent attack with razor slashes that endangered the very existence of the individual piece.
As in the case of the installation of combustible incense skulls, the intention was to capture the fragile and transient position of mankind through the environmental crisis.
